The Azores are located 1369 km west of mainland Europe in the Atlantic Ocean. The archipelago, which belongs to Portugal, includes nine larger and several smaller islands. The entire land area of the islands and about 10,000 km² of the marine area surrounding them are a UNESCO Global Geopark. In addition, the city center of Angra do Heroísmo and the viticultural landscape of Pico Island are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
