The Great Sand Dunes are located in the northeastern San Luis Valley and are the highest dunes in North America, reaching up to 230 m. They cover an area of about 80 km² at an altitude of about 2300 m above sea level. Together with the mountain range behind them, they present an impressive picture all year round.
